Black bun is a type of fruit cake completely covered with pastry. It is Scottish in origin, Black Bun was originally eaten on Twelfth Night but now enjoyed at Hogmanay.
The Black Bun cake mixture typically contains raisins, currants, almonds, citrus peel, allspice, ginger, cinnamon and pepper
A deliciously moist and fruity bun, topped and tailed with pastry.
Black Bun was traditionally eaten at New Year in Scotland, however Dalgettys has become so popular over the past few years that they make it throughout the year.
Alex Dalgetty worked in Selkirk at the bakery which produced the original bannock but leftto set up his own Scottish food business in Galashiels at the turn of the century and so became the first producer of Selkirk Bannocks in Galashiels. From that day to this, Alex. Dalgetty & Son have been making bannocks to the original recipe in their Galashiels bakery. His recipe, using highest quality ingredients, without adding preservatives, colouring or flavouring, is still used today in the bakery, which is run by his great grand daughter and her husband, namely Patricia and Bill Murray.
