Bannock is any of a large variety of flat quick breads. The word can also be applied to any large, round article baked or cooked from grain. When a round bannock is cut into wedges, the wedges are often called scones. But in Scotland, the words bannock and scone are often used interchangeably.
A well-known Scottish bannock is the Selkirk Bannock, a spongy, buttery variety, sometimes compared to a fruitcake made from wheat flour and containing a very large quantity of raisins.
It is for their famous, original Selkirk Bannocks and Black Buns that the bakery business of Alexander Dalgetty & Sons is justly famous. Alex Dalgetty worked in Selkirk at the bakery which produced the original bannock but left to set up his own business in Galashiels at the turn of the century and so he became the first producer of Selkirk Bannocks in Galashiels. From that day to this, Alex Dalgetty & Sons have been making Scottish food, including the Famous Original Selkirk Bannock to the original recipe in our Galashiels bakery. Also available is the equally popular Scotch Black Bun, again made to traditional recipe.
His recipe, using highest quality ingredients, without adding preservatives, colouring or flavouring, is still used today in the bakery, which is run by his great grand daughter and her husband, namely Patricia and Bill Murray.
